What Is Cockroach Janta Party? The Complete Guide

By Sudais Siddique

Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) is a satirical political movement that began online in India on 16 May 2026. If you keep seeing the name and wondering whether it is real, this guide explains who started it, why, what it asks for, and what it is not.

The short answer

CJP, which translates roughly as the Cockroach People’s Party, was launched by political communications strategist Abhijeet Dipke. It started as satire, one day after Chief Justice of India Surya Kant made remarks in court that many people read as comparing unemployed young people to cockroaches. It is not registered with the Election Commission of India.

How it started

On 15 May 2026, during a Supreme Court hearing, Chief Justice Surya Kant described some unemployed young people and social-media activists as cockroaches. He later clarified that he had been talking about people who enter professions with fake degrees, and said he holds India’s youth in high regard. By then the word had already spread. Dipke launched CJP the next day and turned the insult into a banner. The name is also a pun on the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

What it says it stands for

The movement’s tagline casts it as the voice of people who get called lazy and unemployed, and it describes itself as secular, socialist, democratic and, jokingly, lazy. Its membership rules are deliberately silly, but its published manifesto raises serious issues: judicial accountability, electoral transparency, women’s representation, media independence and party defections. We walk through it in our manifesto explainer.

How big did it get?

Reuters reported that CJP gained close to 15 million Instagram followers in under a week, overtaking the official accounts of major parties. Its X account was withheld in India on 21 May 2026 after a government order, and the Delhi High Court ordered it restored on 7 July 2026, according to reports.

From online joke to street protests

From June 2026 the movement organised protests in Delhi, including a sit-in at Jantar Mantar, over irregularities in the NEET medical entrance exam. Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned on 25 July 2026, which supporters celebrated as a win. In August the movement announced a National Working Committee with Dipke as national convenor, and the party name itself has since become the subject of competing trademark applications.

Beyond India

The format travelled quickly. Within a week of the launch, Pakistani social-media accounts with names such as Cockroach Awami Party and Muttahida Cockroach Movement appeared, inspired by the Indian movement’s branding and themes.

What CJP is not, and what this site is

CJP is not a registered political party. It is also not this website.
