The history behind Cockroach Janta Party is unusual. Most internet movements start as a joke and vanish within a week, but Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) did not. Here is its story so far in five stages, with dates drawn from public reports.

Stage 1: The remark (15 May 2026)

During a Supreme Court hearing, Chief Justice of India Surya Kant compared some unemployed young people and social-media activists to cockroaches. He later said he had meant people with fake degrees and that he respects India’s youth, but the comparison had already travelled.

Stage 2: The launch (16 May 2026)

The next day, political communications strategist Abhijeet Dipke launched Cockroach Janta Party online as a satirical response. The name puns on the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, and the tagline made the insult a badge of honour.

Stage 3: Going viral (late May 2026)

Within a week CJP had around 15 million Instagram followers. On 21 May its official X account was withheld in India, and a new account appeared within minutes. The movement also published its five-point manifesto this month, and copycat accounts started appearing in Pakistan.

Stage 4: The protests (June to July 2026)

From June, CJP moved offline with demonstrations in Delhi, including a sit-in at Jantar Mantar, over irregularities in the NEET medical entrance exam. On 7 July the Delhi High Court ordered the original X account restored. On 25 July Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned, which supporters hailed as a victory.

Stage 5: Becoming an organisation (August 2026)

In August the movement announced a National Working Committee with Dipke as national convenor. It remains unregistered with the Election Commission of India, and several people have applied to trademark its name. We are an independent, unofficial site and are not part of this organisation.
